James Peter Rodes, age 78, of Kingsley passed away peacefully at home Thursday, March 26, 2015 while surrounded by his loving family, after a courageous 10-year battle with cancer. He was born December 6, 1936 in Kingsley to Anthony and Pauline (Lassa) Rodes. Jim graduated from Kingsley High School in 1955 and enlisted in the US Army in 1958. He served his country in Germany until 1964. Jim married Doris Ann Reamer on April 8, 1961 at St. Mary's Hannah Catholic Church. Together they raised 5 children.

James Peter Rodes, age 78, of Kingsley passed away peacefully at home Thursday, March 26, 2015 while surrounded by his loving family, after a courageous 10-year battle with cancer. He was born December 6, 1936 in Kingsley to Anthony and Pauline (Lassa) Rodes. Jim graduated from Kingsley High School in 1955 and enlisted in the US Army in 1958. He served his country in Germany until 1964. Jim married Doris Ann Reamer on April 8, 1961 at St. Mary's Hannah Catholic Church. Together they raised 5 children.
Jim worked for the Grand Traverse County Road Commission for over 33 years, retiring in 1995. Jim was very active in his community. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, American Legion Post 436 of Kingsley, St. Mary's Hannah Men's Club, the Buckley Old Engine Club, Northwestern Michigan Fair (4H), and was a referee for basketball, volleyball, and coached the very first little league baseball team at St. Mary's of Hannah School.
In his spare time, Jim enjoyed hunting, fishing, wood working, gardening, camping and attending his grandchildren's sporting events. Jim assisted his brother Donald in building the Kingsley football and track field, honorably named the 'Rodes Field'. Jim will be remembered for living life to the fullest and for his endless service of volunteering.
Jim is survived by his wife of 54 years Dorie; children, Thomas (Kathy) of Traverse City, Michael (Robin) of Traverse City, Pamela (Scott) Leverenz of Indianapolis, IN, Lori Gauthier of Traverse City, and Randy (Lori) of Traverse City; 13 grandchildren, Jennifer, Jami, Brooke, Justin, Tayler, Jordan, Kaleb, Jenna, Austin, Nicholas, Trevor, Carter, and Connor; great grandson Lincoln; sister Dorothy Cox and brother Jack (Sandy) Rodes.
Besides his parents, Jim was preceded in death by a brother Donald and a sister Joan Kolenic.
The family would like to thank Doctor Richard P. Kosinski , his staff and Munson Hospice for their kindness and comfort during a most difficult time.
Cremation has taken place and the family will be hosting a Celebration Gathering Sunday, March 29, 2015 from 6-8pm with a vigil service presided by Rev. Michael P. Conner at 7pm at St. Mary's Hannah Catholic Church. A memorial mass will be held Monday, March 30, 2015 at 10am with visitation 1 hour prior. Burial will take place at St. Mary's Hannah Catholic Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorial contributions be made in Jim's name to St. Mary's Hannah Catholic Church or American Legion Post 436 of Kingsley (PO Box 81, Kingsley, MI 49649).
