Katheryn M. Hammer, age 98, of Kingsley passed away peacefully Thursday, March 26, 2015 at Carvath Village Assisted Living in Middleville. Kay was born January 8, 1917 in Traverse City to Frank and Estella (Allgaier) Rusch. Kay's parents owned and operated the popular Rusch Dance Hall south of Traverse City.
Kay married the late Willard "Bill" Hammer on July 20, 1945 at St. Mary's of Hannah Catholic Church. She was a farmer's wife, mother, and a valued employee of Interlochen School for the Arts as the head of housekeeping.

Katheryn M. Hammer, age 98, of Kingsley passed away peacefully Thursday, March 26, 2015 at Carvath Village Assisted Living in Middleville. Kay was born January 8, 1917 in Traverse City to Frank and Estella (Allgaier) Rusch. Kay's parents owned and operated the popular Rusch Dance Hall south of Traverse City.
Kay married the late Willard "Bill" Hammer on July 20, 1945 at St. Mary's of Hannah Catholic Church. She was a farmer's wife, mother, and a valued employee of Interlochen School for the Arts as the head of housekeeping.
Kay and Bill were members of the Eagles and they loved to go dancing. She also enjoyed BINGO, crocheting, sewing, and cooking. She and Bill tended a huge garden and grew some of the largest vegetables in the area. They always gladly donated their goods to friends and neighbors.
Kay is survived by her daughter Linda Bedford of Middleville and son Daniel (Zerelda) Hammer; Grandchildren: Kimberly Bedford of Wayland, Daniel (Danielle) Hammer of Pensacola, FL, and Rachel (Gene) Way; Great grandchildren: Sarah and Savannah Hammer and Brooklynn, Gene, and Allyson Way; a brother Joseph Rusch and a sister Dorothy Corp.
Besides her parents, Kay was preceded in death by her husband in 2006, brothers: Leonard, Wilfred "Andy", Kenneth, Frank Rusch, Son-in-law Douglas Bedford.
A funeral mass will be held Tuesday, March 31, 2015 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's of Hannah Catholic Church with visitation one hour prior. Burial will take place in the spring at Evergreen Cemetery in Kingsley.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Alzheimer's Association or Multiple Myeloma Foundation.
